Microsoft’s New URL Shortenging Service: Binged.it

Microsoft is trying out its own URL shortening service, going by the name Binged.it If you had clicked on the previous link you must have noticed that it is not a new website launched by Microsoft, but apparently the link is being redirected to bit.ly.

We recently spotted this on an update by fareologist service by Bing on Twitter. But it seems, we were not the first to spot this new URL shortening service by Microsoft. Mymicrosoftlife has already spotted and posted about it a week back.

Binged.it is a catchy and nice name for a URL shortening service for Bing. It seems that even Microsoft is entering the URL shortening domain, similar to Google with goo.gl and Facebook with fb.me. But this service is not open to public until now, and going by the history of Microsoft, we do not see it to be going free for public use eventually.

If Microsoft seems interested in a service like this, it wouldn’t be surprised to a WinLi.ve service launched with the release of Windows Live Wave 4. As seattlepi is stating from a spokesperson from Microsoft:

“Currently in partnership with Bit.ly, we are using a URL shortener called Binged.it, available to the internal Microsoft network at this time,” a spokesperson said. “We have nothing additional to share at this time.”

But we have second thoughts about this service from Microsoft. It seems pretty sure that Microsoft is paying bit.ly to use the bit.ly service with the “binged.it” domain-name. We really doubt that Microsoft is building a URL-shortening service, because as we see, the market is not large enough for Microsoft to pursue. Also the “binged.it” name is longer than most URL shortening services, even longer than its own URL “bing.com“. Microsoft would have easily used bing.it, which is also being redirected to bing.com.
