LED TV price premium to drop to 50%, shipments to jump 10-fold in 2010, says AUO executive

The premium for LED-backlit LCD TVs is expected to drop to 50% more than the price of CCFL-backlit models in 2010, compared to double in 2009, and sales are expected to increase 10-fold, according to AU Optronics (AUO) executive VP of global business unit Paul Peng.

Peng indicated that the difference in production costs between 40-inch LED and CCFL backlight unit (BLU) is still over 50% at present, but there is almost no difference for the 18.5- to 19-inch segment. The LED-backlit TV market is expected to see polarized development, with vendors more eager to roll out models either for the high-end larger-size or the low-cost smaller-size segments, Peng added.

LED-backlit TV panels will only have a 10% share of the global LCD TV market in the first quarter of 2010, and its share will increase to 20% for the whole year, Peng said, noting that demand for LED-backlit TVs will increase significantly when the price difference with CCFL models drops to 20-30%.

LED-backlit TV retail prices dropped by an average of 5-6% in January 2010 as vendors cut prices to gain market share, according to market sources. Production cost was lower because of improved LED efficiency, improved manufacturing process and less LED light bars needed for a TV, the sources noted, adding that LCD TV retail prices in average only dropped by 1-2% in January.

The global LED-backlit TV market is expected to reach over 30 million units in 2010, up from 3.5 million in 2009, the sources added.
