Samsung is aiming to treble its shipments of smartphones and boost its applications market this year. Oulining its plan of action, the company plans to agressively promote smartphones based on a range of different platforms, Linux, Android and Windows Mobile - as well as its own Bada OS.
"There'll be a big change in our smartphone strategy this year," Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung's mobile division, said. "We plan to strengthen our smartphone business this year by not just improving hardware offerings but also beefing up content, applications, services."
Samsung currently has a smartphone market share of around 3 percent, compared to 17% for Apple and 35% for Nokia.
Shin Jong-kyun admitted that the target would be a challenge as competition is increased due to the entry of computer manufacturers into the mobile market, along with low-end handset vendors moving upmarket.
The company has set itself a target of shipping some 18 million smartphones during 2010. The company also aims to boost its overall handset shipments from 227 million in 2009 to around 265 million in 2010.
