India's Spice Mobiles says that it aims to start manufacturing its own handsets in India by the end of this year, and has a sales target to sell at least one million Indian produced handsets from this April. The company already sells on average 1.5 million OEM manufactured handsets per quarter.
The company will start trial production of handsets from next month.
Spice Mobiles Director and CEO Kunal Ahooja said: "We already have a facility in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, where we manufacture other devices. We will start trial production of our handsets from next month and start start the commercial manufacturing following that by the end of this year,"
The company also named actor Sonam Kapoor as it new brand ambassador, as it aims to expand its retail distribution network to over 100,000 retail counters over the next 2 years.
Spice Mobiles has also enhanced its presence outside India with entry into Bangladesh and Nepal, now seeking to enter the African market. In India, Rajasthan, Assam, Haryana continue to be very strong markets for Spice Mobiles where the company ranks second in terms of sales followed by Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra (except Mumbai), UP and Uttaranchal. Other states such as Gujarat are also picking up in sales strongly.
