New standards from the Blu-ray Disc Association introduce specifications catering for up to 128GBs of storage capacity.
The Blu-ray Disc Association have announced new specifications for disc capacity further developing on the optical disc technology. The increased capacity will come in two flavours:
Firstly the BDXL specification, which will provide either 100GB or 128GB of space on a single 'write once' disc, re-writable BDXL disc will be able to store 100GB only. Secondly there is the new IH-BD specification which stands for Intra-Hybrid Blu-ray Disc. This dual layer offering will support 25GB per layer, one layer being BR-ROM and the other BD-RE.
Now for the bad news, both of these new formats will not be supported by the current flock of Blu-ray players, which means that if you are looking to take advantage of this extra storage space, you're going to need to invest in a brand new player that will support both specifications. This is the inevitable downside to progress unfortunately.
These new Blu-ray players should start to pop up very soon, we'll keep you posted as and when they are announced
