Japan's NTT DoCoMo has more than doubled its fiscal fourth quarter profits thanks to sharp cuts in the handset subsidies its offers to customers. The net profit jumped to YEN75.4 billion (US$809.3 million) from YEN34.2 billion yen a year ago.
Revenue were down by 2.5% to YEN1.042 trillion as increased ARPU offset the decline in handset sales.
For the full-year ending in March, net profit grew 4.9% to YEN494.8 billion.
Revenue slipped 2.5% to 1.042 trillion yen from 1.069 trillion yen as increased network services sales soaked up most of the loss in revenue from handset sales.
At the end of March, the mobile network had a shade over 56 million subscribers, of which 95% were using the 3G network. Subscriber growth over the year was 1.48 million.
