Last week ended with dramatic Motorola Droid update saga, where we saw the first OTA Android 2.1 update notification appeared only on some lucky users devices. Motorola and Verizon both officially confirmed this just a few days ago. Finally with the update in place, the wonderful community of Android devs can get back to work. The title is a little deceiving, the actual Android 2.1 has not been rooted. There isn’t a way to go from stock Android 2.1 to rooted Android 2.1, but the there is a way to downgrade back to 2.0.1 and gain root access from there.
It is a pretty painless and simple process, although if you had your Droid rooted and flashed a custom rom before the update, then you really already had all the features that the new 2.1 update brought to the table. If you want to take plunge, then here are the steps to gain root access on your Motorola Droid with Android 2.1.
1. Downgrade using the 2.0.1 SBF file and follow the instructions here.
2. Download the 2.1 update.zip from here.
3. Download the attached .zip file from here, and name it droid-ESE81-update-2.zip
4. Open command prompt and run the following command to combine them: copy /b signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip+droid-ESE81-update-2.zip update.zip (If this is successful then you get a file named update.zip)
5. Then copy the update.zip to your SDCard (root meaning, inside no folders), reboot to STOCK recovery
6. In recovery, press Volume + and Camera then use the D-pad to select Apply update.zip
7. The end result, your Droid has been successfully rooted!
Until the stock 2.1 rom is rooted, this will more than suffice in the meantime.
