Mozambique's government has finally issued a long anticipated tender for a third mobile network operator license. There is a reserve price of US$25 million for the license, with submissions due by July 6th 2010. Transport and Communications Minister Paulo Zucula says the winner could begin operating within 30 days of the license being granted.
Portugal Telecom has previously said that it would bid for a 3rd license, which at the time was expected to be offered around the middle of last year.
According to figures from the Mobile World analysts, the country ended last year with around 6.55 million subscribers, representing a population penetration level of 36%. mCel is the dominant operator, with a market share of 65% - compared to 35% for rival, Vodacom.
Plans by the government to sell a small stake in Moçambique Celular (mCel) have been discussed in the past, but no progress has been made so far.
