Mozilla lights up Jetpack 0.3 release with API goodness

Mozilla released version 0.3 of its Jetpack software development kit (SDK) yesterday.

Importantly the latest release, currently being readied for the big time with a planned slot into the open source outfit’s popular browser Firefox, now comes with two high-level APIs.

Previous releases came minus any APIs for building rich add-ons into the SDK.

The “context menu” API allows add-ons to bolt items to the context menu for web pages, thereby giving users additional options when they context-click on elements in pages, said Mozilla.

It’s also added a “self” API to this release, which enables add-ons to access web page, image and other resources that are bundled with the add-on package.

Mozilla added that Jetpack 0.3 comes with a series of bug fixes and other tweaks.

In March the organisation shifted Jetpack - which was created for coders with HTML, JavaScript and CSS standard web skills to make add-ons for Firefox - out of its experimental Labs unit less than a year after it first landed on planet Mozilla.
