Qualcomm MEMS Technologies has launched a 5.7-inch XGA color Mirasol display, and expects the product to start volume production in 2010 at the 4.5G production plant in Longtan, Taiwan jointly set up with Foxlink, according to the company VP of business development James Cathey.
Qualcomm expects to enter the e-book reader and tablet PC markets through the newly launched 5.7-inch Mirasol panel. Qualcomm is currently working with several clients, but is unable to reveal details, Cathey noted.
Mirasol is based on a reflective technology called IMOD (interferometric modulation), with MEMS structures at its core. Different from the popular electrophoresis technology, Mirasol color displays do not need color filters (CFs) or backlighting.
Qualcomm is expected to launch more Mirasol panels for different applications in the second half of 2010, market sources added.
