Shipments of small- to medium-size LCD panels in the first quarter of 2010 were better than expected due to demand from consumer electronics, as well as stimulation from new applications with touch panels. Shipments in the second quarter are expected to increase significantly, according to Taiwan-based makers.
Small- to medium-size panel makers such as Wintek saw its revenues for March increase by about 60% sequentially, mainly due to shipments of medium- to large-size projected capacity touch panels bundled with its LCD panels. The company expects shipments to continue to increase significantly in the second quarter, the sources said.
Giantplus Technology is expected to report strong growth for March revenues, the sources said, adding that the peak season has arrived earlier than usual, the sources added.
With touchscreen becoming a trend for handheld devices such handsets, digital still cameras (DSCs), PNDs and games consoles, several panel makers are actively developing touch panel products that offer higher margins, the sources added.
Many small- to medium-size panel makers have reported losses for 2009, as panel prices and demand dropped significantly during the global economic downturn.
Although demand started picking up in the second half of 2009, panel prices were mostly decreasing amid over-supply in the market, the sources said.
