Tamin Telecom Regains Iranian Mobile Network License

Iran seems to have finally, and formally reassigned the cancelled 3rd mobile network operator license to state-owned Tamin Telecom after it secured technical support from an outside backer. The state-run news agency, IRNA, via Reuters did not say who the other parties in the consortium are.

The company, which is an affiliate of the Social Security Investment Company of Iran, was originally granted a license back in January 2009 in a consortium with the UAE's Etisalat.

Tamin Telecom was then apparently stripped of its license in May after it tried to change the commercial relationship with Etisalat, which had a 49% stake in the joint-venture. The regulator seemingly objected to the changes and cancelled the license. It was claimed last October, that Tamin Telecom had regained the license, but was still seeking an outside partner to assist it.

Since then a host of other companies have been named as possible suitors for the license, including Zain and Russia's Megafon, all of whom either denied involvement or backed away from the tender.

The license was notable as in addition to the standard GSM service, it also granted a two-year monopoly for 3G services in Iran.
