Talks to avert strike action at Telefonica O2 UK have continued with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) saying that its negotiators were pleased by the latest meeting with O2 held last week in the current protracted round of pay talks.

Lead negotiator Ian Cuthbert described the meeting as "positive" but emphasised that no agreement had yet been met on the issues of pay or pay progression.

"We had a positive meeting today in which we explored with O2 management what pay progression, for those who do not have it, could look like" Ian said. "This was a welcome development and we're heartened that O2 has changed its stance from an outright 'no' to one of discussion.

"We reaffirmed our determination for a better pay offer significantly higher than 2 per cent and also for ways to address pay progression which is currently non-existent for certain grades in the company. We're determined to explore every avenue to find an amicable settlement but we have told O2 that this is not open-ended.

In terms of next steps, Ian explained: "The company is now considering our points and we expect them to respond within the next ten days. We're hoping that another meeting will be scheduled soon to move the discussions on."

The union had threatened strike action after the negotiations, based on a proposal that was been rejected in March were still continuing.
