A survey of mobile phone ownership in Finland has found, possibly unsurprisingly, that Nokia dominates its home market, with 90% of the market. Samsung, which comes second has just 5 percent of the Finnish market.
The survey was carried out by the Helsinki University of Technology and used anonomised data from the mobile networks to work out which handsets are being used on the networks. The data was collected in September/October 2005-2009.
Notable though was that Sonera declined to provide information on the Apple iPhone usage.
Over the time frame of the survey, the researchers also saw the use of data modems and embedded data terminals rise from 0.6% of the market to 7.8% by 2009. However, smartphones (e.g., Symbian) were not in top ranks of the list of mobile phones being used.
In terms of operating system, the Nokia Series 40 is the largest development platform with 50% of the market, while the share of Symbian (22%) is growing slowly.
