Android Phones Light-up UK Mobile Handset Market with Startling Growth

The popularity of Android phones has gathered considerable pace in the last month - with latest UK figures showing sales growth increasing fourfold in just four weeks.

Android has emerged as the star debutant of mobile handsets with Advanced Operating Systems (OS), with latest statistics from GfK Retail and Technology showing that contract Android phones rose in terms of handsets sold from 3.0% of the contract market in week 12 to reach 12.3% in week 15. In terms of the total market, Android's share grew from 1.6% to 6.7% during this period.

Phones with Advanced OS account for 37.6% of the total mobile handset market, although this share jumps to 63.9% when considering the contract only sector. With this figure remaining fairly stable, the strong performance of Android phones shows what a significant influence they are having on the Advanced OS market. Almost one in every five Advanced OS phone purchased is an Android. This coincides with the continued growth of touch screens, as consumers migrate towards this form factor.

"The impressive growth rate exhibited in recent weeks is due to a succession of launches by several manufacturers," commented GfK Analyst Megan Baldock.
