BlackBerry 9650 Unboxing and Impressions

The BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Bold 9650 that was launched on Sprint two weeks ago just came through my door this morning, and I’ve had the day to play around with it. It feels a bit beefier than I remember its predecessor, the Tour 9630 being, but that’s by no means a bad thing. I’m used to the 9000, and the 9650 feels like an excellent upgrade. It has some heft, and a nice ridged battery door for extra grip, but otherwise looks like the original Tour. The trackpad replacing the trackball is the obvious exception, and the inclusion of Wi-Fi makes me think this was the all-in-one device that the first Tour should have been. The single thing that sticks out right now is the 512 MB of app memory – a first for any BlackBerry, and a pretty big deal considering how quickly 256 MB can fill up.

Sprint (NYSE: S) has been promising this one for a long time, but between the Bold 9650, Curve 8530, and Storm2 9550, it seems like most of Sprint’s bases are now covered. I’d like to see the new Pearl on a CDMA carrier, but that usually takes upwards of 6-8 months.

For folks looking for a CDMA version of the Bold 9700, the 9650 fits the bill, but I wouldn’t expect any pleasant (or unplesant) surprises. It’s got the same 3.2 megapixel camera, HVGA display, mediocre browser, and top-notch e-mail handling. Although you can nab it now from Sprint for $200 on contract, Verizon (NYSE: VZ)’s on the verge of releasing their own. Up here in Canada, I would be surprised to see Bell or Telus (NYSE: TU) offer it, since they’re both packing the GSM Bold 9700 already.

If you’d like to hear more about the 9650, stick around – a full review will be coming next week. In the meantime, here are some pictures and video. Show of hands, who’s thinking of picking one up?

Twitter for Blackberry Gets Updated

RIM announced that a new update for its Twitter application has been rolled out. The application is still in beta and introduces a slew of new and user-requested features. Here is the complete changelog:

Quote Tweets
- The new version of Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones allows users to quote a tweet by selecting the “Quote Tweet” from the menu options. Using the new feature adds quotation marks around the original tweet, and users can then add or edit the content of the original tweet.

Username Auto Complete
- While tweeting, when you type an “@” followed by characters, the auto complete feature pops up a list of users as you type. This is a handy tool for quickly adding a long username or if you can’t quite remember how to spell a friend’s handle.

Go to User
- Users can now access Twitter profiles from anywhere within Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones using the auto complete feature mentioned above. Simply select “Go To User” in the Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones menu.

Personal Information Guard

Designed to help keep your personal information safe! A warning appears in Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones when certain personal information (e.g. email address, PIN, phone number) is about to be shared.

Additional Photo viewing support
In addition to Twitpic support, users now have the ability to view tweeted photos from YFrog and TweetPhoto!

View Geotagged Tweets

Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones does not yet allow users to add geolocation to their tweets. In the new version, however, the locations of geotagged tweets can be viewed using BlackBerry® Maps.

New Navigation Hotkeys
A bunch of new hotkeys have been added for speedy navigation. Familiarize yourself with the list below as they are quite helpful:

* R (reply)
* L (reply all)
* Space (page down)
* F (retweet)
* C (compose)
* D (refresh)
* Alt+0 (home)
* Alt+1 (mentions)
* Alt+2 (lists)
* Alt+3 (profile)
* Alt+4 (inbox)
* Alt+5 (find people)
* Alt+6 (search)

Fuchsia BlackBerry Curve 8520, White Bold 9700 now on T-Mobile

As expected, T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) has released the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Curve 8520 in fuchsia and the Bold 9700 in white. While the white Bold has made the rounds, the fuchsia 8520 looks like it’s an exclusive offer. The two BlackBerrys are really pitted at opposite ends of the value spectrum; the 9700 is RIM’s top-of-the-line smartphone, featuring a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, HVGA display9700, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 256 MB of application memory. On the flip side, the Curve 8520 has a 2 megapixel camera with no flash, Wi-Fi (no GPS), and a QVGA display. Of course, that disparity is justified with dramatically different price points: $49.99 on a two-year contract for the Curve, or $129.99 on a two-year contract for the Bold. Both offer calling over Wi-Fi through T-Mobile’s UMA service.

We’re still not sure if T-Mobile will pick up the new Pearl 9100, so if you’re on the verge of getting a BlackBerry, you’re probably safe to nab either the 8520 or 9700 in the new colours without too much regret down the line. Besides, the only thing the new Pearl has over the Bold is Wi-Fi 802.11 n.

Twitter for BlackBerry Updating Tonight With Quoting, Shortcuts

Those of you who have been enjoying the official Twitter for BlackBerry app will be happy to hear that there are a few new features on the way tonight. Quoting (i.e. editable retweets), viewing geotagged tweets, picture preview support for Yfrog and TweetPhoto, and navigation shortcuts are all here. A few smaller usability features are also included, like new navigation shortcuts for tabs, privacy warnings in case you’re accidentally tweeting e-mails or phone numbers, and auto-complete suggestions when making an @ mention.

There’s still a few things missing, like geotagging your tweets, multiple account support, and address book integration, but I’m sure they’ll come all in good time.

The update should be pushed out tonight for those who already have the app, and if you don’t, you can nab it at the App World link below.
