Negroponte: One Laptop Per Child is now a $75 Android Tablet

The former head of MIT's Media Lab said the next OLPC device, the XO-3, would be a 9-inch tablet made by Marvell and running Google's Android OS.
The first OLPC was an underpowered, 'designed-by-committee' laptop that cost at least double of what it was supposed to. Most importantly, didn't adapt to the needs of the children who used it. For instance, it didn't have a method for non-Latin characters to be input. It was also made of plastic and had moving parts that would often break in rugged environments.
At CES in January this year, that will change, according to Nicolas Negroponte.
The new OLPC devices will take the lead from Apple's iPad but use Google's (GOOG) Android OS, at least initially. The keyboard will be virtual and be able to adapt to different languages.
XO-3 will also have some specs that might appeal to a broader audience (myself included). Quoting the WSJ (subscription req):
The new tablets will have at least one, and maybe two, video cameras. They'll sport Wi-Fi connections to the Internet, multi-touch screens and have enough power to play high-definition and 3-D video. Unlike Apple Inc.'s iPad tablet, the device will also work with plug-in peripherals such as mice and keyboards.
[I'm aware that iPhone's Touch OS doesn't need a mouse (and one's been hacked, anyway) and Apple supplies both keyboard docks and Bluetooth Keyboards as well]
Negroponte said the new tablets will not use Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows 7 because the software requires too much memory and computing power. That's been a common theme lately and might be a reason that HP (HP) picked up Palm.
Going tablet might be something he picked up from Apple (AAPL). Negroponte got advice from Apple's CEO Steve Jobs on the eve first OLPC launch:
"I got an email from Steve Jobs (the night the laptop was revealed) he said you can't build it for a hundred dollars, and my answer was oh yes I can," Negroponte said as part of a lecture at the University of Pennsylvania, Thursday night.
"He was actually a very good critic, and each time we got to a point, I did talk to him," Negroponte added. Negroponte also mentioned his displeasure with Microsoft, both in terms of Windows 7 performance, and Microsoft's attempts to thwart the OLPC initiative.
The device will be based on Marvell's Moby platform and will initially cost $99 for the hardware, but that price is expected to drop to $75 by 2011. What does the Moby platform buy you? According to Marvell, Moby is:

The nonprofit organization that has tried for years to produce a sub-$100 laptop for children in the world's poorest places is throwing in the towel on that idea — and jumping on the tablet bandwagon.
One Laptop Per Child's next computer will be based on chipmaker Marvell Technology Group Ltd.'s Moby tablet design. Marvell announced a prototype of the device earlier this year and said it costs about $99.
Nicholas Negroponte, founder of One Laptop Per Child, is optimistic his organization will be able to keep the price under $100 in part because Marvell plans to market its tablets widely to schools and health care institutions.
"We want to see the price drop, and volume is the key to that," Negroponte said.
The quirky green and white XO laptop sold by One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) to governments and organizations in countries such as Afghanistan and Uruguay for about $200, on the other hand, wasn't meant for such a broad audience. It also had more moving parts. The physical keyboard had to be customized for students in countries that don't use a Latin alphabet.
Marvell's co-founder, Weili Dai, said the company has also found ways to cut costs in the way it's designing the chips.
The new tablets will have at least one, and maybe two, video cameras. They'll sport Wi-Fi connections to the Internet, "multi-touch" screens and have enough power to play high-definition and 3-D video. Unlike Apple Inc.'s iPad tablet, the device will also work with plug-in peripherals such as mice and keyboards.
Negroponte said he eventually wants the tablets to run some version of the free Linux operating software. But the first generation of the "XO 3.0" tablet will likely use Android, the mobile-device operating system from Google Inc., or something similar.
Although the group, which is based in Cambridge, Mass., worked with Microsoft Corp. to get its Windows operating system running on the XO laptops, Negroponte said the new tablets will not use Windows 7 because the software requires too much memory and computing power.
Negroponte said he plans to unveil the tablet device at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Sony VAIO Z117 Notebook Review

There’s only one notebook that manages to lure me away from my MacBook Pro and that is the Sony VAIO Z series. About two years back, I had sold my 15″ MacBook Pro and gotten the Sony but then Apple released the 13″ MBP and I was back on the Mac bandwagon. I found the recent updates to MBP a bit underwhelming- especially to the 13″ version which has become my favorite form factor for a notebook. The Sony VAIO Z on the other hand recieved an incredibe upgrade and thus it was time for me to sell my 13″ MBP and head back to Windows land.
I bought the medium-end configuration which by no means is a mid-end config from any angle. Equipped with a Core i5-520 CPU running at 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR3-1066 RAM, an NVIDIA GT330 graphics card with 1GB RAM as well as Intel HD graphics and a 128GB SSD running in RAID0 mode are just some of the highlights of this notebook. Add to that the gorgeous 13″ hardly-reflective LED screen with a resolution of 1600×900 pixels and a carbon-fibre body and you can probably understand why someone with a Mac can turn to Windows for. Connectivity options are also plenty on the Z with 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 built-in along with an option for WAN.

The first thing you notice about the Sony VAIO Z11 is how incredibly light it is. Weighing under 1.4kg, the notebook is extremely easy to carry around with you. Although its a bit thicker than the MacBook Pro, the weight makes the Z11 more portable. Construction quality on the Z11 is alright but this is definitely one area where the MacBook Pro wins hands down. The screen on the Z11 flexes a bit and the battery shifts in its place while the palm rest has a plasticy feel to it. Suffice to say, a Unibody MBP it isnt.
The left side of the laptop features the power connector, a Gigabit network connector, HDMI out and two USB ports seperated by an Express Slot in the middle. The front has slots for SD and Sony’s Memory Stick on the left while the right has audio input/output jacks and a Wi-Fi on/off switch which tends to move a bit easier than I would’ve like it to. Finally, the right side has an additional USB port, the optical drive (A DVD Writer) and the power switch. The optical drive can be upgraded to BluRay if you’re willing to spend more, however, I think a slot-in drive would have been a better idea than the tray based one that Sony equips the Z series with.
Besides the hardware refresh, there are a couple of nice additions that Sony has added to the new Z series. First of all, much like the MBP, the keyboard now has a backlight for people that work under darker conditions. I also quite like the keyboard on the Z, more than the keyboard on my 13″ MBP which is saying something. Sony has also increased the size of the trackpad and with new drivers from Synaptics, multi-touch, including two finger scrolling is also supported which works but isn’t as fluid as a Mac.
Above the keyboard, you have a three-way switch that lets you select between the NVIDIA GPU and the Intel GPU or automatically let the system decide using Optimus technology. On the other side, there are three keys and an eject button for the optical drive. It seems that Sony has designed the Z series for people that want to switch from a Mac to PC by giving you an almost identical experience. Windows still isn’t as fluid of an experience as the Mac OS and I had it crash on my a couple of times within a week but I guess that comes as a given when you have to support the sheer number of components that Windows does.
I chose to compare the benchmark numbers on this Sony VAIO with the Alienware MX11 that we had reviewed some time back which is also a highly portable notebook that performs extra-ordinarily. I’ve benchmarked the Z in both “Speed” and “Stamina” modes or using the NVIDIA GPU as well as the Intel GPU. The following table outlines the results.
As you can see, the Core i5 CPU on the Sony VAIO along with the 128GB RAID0 SSD can’t be matched by the Alienware. In fact, the Sony VAIO Z11 is the fastest notebook we’ve ever worked with. Surprisingly, the heat and noise generated by the Z11 wasn’t much to complain about. The left side has a vent and a fan that comes on when you’re gaming or running a benchmark and that could get a bit noisy. But under normal everyday use, the machine is extremely quiet. The bottom of the machine didn’t even get close to being as hot as my MacBook Pro would with everyday usage.
Now generally, this kind of power takes it toll on the battery life so I wasn’t expecting anything incredible in terms of battery life on the Sony VAIO Z11 and thus, I was not surprised by the results. Using the integrated graphics, I manged to get a little over four hours on this notebook. Switching to the discrete controller dropped it to three or below depending on what I’m doing. For example, gaming on it wont give you more than a couple of hours. Alternatively, you can buy an extended battery which will tilt the angle of the machine and add weight to it but will also increase the battery life to over six hours bringing it more in line with a 13″ MBP.
For all this power and portability, Sony sure charges you a pretty penny. The model that I’ve reviewed sells for about AED 8,500 (US$2300.) There is a lower priced model which removes the optical drive and replaces the SSD with a traditional 500GB hard drive for a 1500 Dirhams less. Alternatively, you can pay AED 11,000 and get the top of the line model with a full HD 1080p screen and a 256GB SSD.
The Z11 is expensive- but you get what you pay for which is an insanely fastest yet incredibly portable notebook. Just wish that it had a better battery life.

HP recalls exploding laptop batteries
Hewlett Packard has expanded a battery recall first announced in May 2009 to include a number of additional laptop models.
The voluntary recall and replacement programme was imposed by "various government agencies" according to HP and has now been revised twice after the company conducted further investigations with their suppliers.
The new models affected include notebooks from the Pavillion, Compaq Presario, HP and HP Compaq ranges, a full list of which is available here.
The dodgy batteries were shipped worldwide and can "overheat, posing a burn and fire hazard".
"HP customers affected by this program[me] will be eligible to receive a replacement battery pack for each verified, recalled battery pack at no cost," says the recall notice.

Intel outs 32nm chips for slim laptops

Intel has expanded it Core processor line with new-up 32nm offerings designed to be wedged into super slim laptops.
The company reckons its new CPUs are 32 per cent slimmer and offer 32 per cent better performance, which all seems a bit convenient to us, but the numbers are just as believable as most industry benchmarks.
Intel says its new chips reduce power consumption by 15 per cent, ruining the nice neat numbers in one fell swoop.
"Consumers crave laptops that offer style and performance, and the new 2010 Intel Core Ultra-Low Voltage processors for ultra-thin laptops delivers both, in one sleek design," said someone very important from Intel, before adding, "Intel's leadership in 32nm high-k metal gate process technology, combined with breakthrough architecture and design has enabled thinner, lighter and faster notebooks than previous models, with terrific battery life. Not only are laptops becoming ultraportable, but with the new processors inside, users will see faster response times and less waiting."
The likes of Acer, Asus, Lenovo and MSI are expected to churn out as many as 40 new designs based on the 32nm architecture in the coming weeks.

Panasonic upgrades Toughbook 19 convertible tablet PC with Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost

Panasonic’s rugged Toughbook 19 is getting a little tougher and a little faster with some snappy upgrades, including some speedy Intel features.
The 5.1-lbs. machine is going from a Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 1.2GHz processor to a Core i5 i5-540UM vProTM 1.2GHz CPU, with Turbo Boost up to 2.0GHz. Not bad indeed. While the option for Windows XP downgrade remains, the operating system standard will jump from Vista to Windows 7 Professional.
Some of the other add-on options include Gobi2000 3G with GPS and integrated WiMAX for the boost to 4G connectivity.
Like most other rugged machines, the Toughbook is spill-resistant and ready for some serious drops (from up to six feet). Developers have tested it and certified it ready for operating in “hazardous and mission-critical environments.” And if you’re afraid of who might be looking over your shoulder, the screen is ready to be put into concealed mode for extra security.

The 5.1-lbs. machine is going from a Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 1.2GHz processor to a Core i5 i5-540UM vProTM 1.2GHz CPU, with Turbo Boost up to 2.0GHz. Not bad indeed. While the option for Windows XP downgrade remains, the operating system standard will jump from Vista to Windows 7 Professional.
Some of the other add-on options include Gobi2000 3G with GPS and integrated WiMAX for the boost to 4G connectivity.
Like most other rugged machines, the Toughbook is spill-resistant and ready for some serious drops (from up to six feet). Developers have tested it and certified it ready for operating in “hazardous and mission-critical environments.” And if you’re afraid of who might be looking over your shoulder, the screen is ready to be put into concealed mode for extra security.

Intel announces new chips for ultrathin laptops, processors for tablets coming next week
Intel announced this morning a broader line of processors for ultrathin laptops, a category that has gotten off to a slow-than-expected start, but is now expected to grow quickly. The new ultra low-voltage chips, which range from Celerons all the way up to Core i7, will show up primarily in thin notebooks with 12- and 13-inch displays starting in June. During the Webcast to announce the new ultrathin processors, Mooly Eden, the vice president and general manager of Intel’s PC Client Group, said the company would also announce a separate family of processors designed specifically for tablets at the Computex tradeshow in Taiwan next week.
Eden introduced the new ultrathin line by discussing how the client PC has evolved from the big, beige and boring box to PCs that come in all shapes and sizes. In response, Intel has been fine-tuning its processors to meet the needs of these different categories. “The way that we design microprocessors today enables us to optimize the solution for each one of those segments,” he said. “The ultrathin microprocessor which fits into the ultrathin solution is addressing all of these areas–better battery life, better performance. It’s going to be lighter, it’s going to be smaller, and definitely it will look better.”
Intel already sells a handful of low-voltage and ultra low-voltage dual-core processors based on the 32nm process using high-k and metal gates, which it introduced in January. But these first 32nm ULV processors were relatively high-priced ranging from the $241 Core i5-540Um to the $305 Core i7-640UM. Now the same technology will be available at a range of prices and in Core i3, Pentium and Celeron versions as well. The entry-level 1.06GHz Celeron U3400 is priced at $134.

With Intel set to release a more powerful dual-core version of Atom, it would seem like there would be a lot of overlap here, especially on laptops with 10- or 11.6-inch displays, which could easily use either solution. But Eden said that while Intel was making Atom more powerful, it was simultaneously increasing the performance of the Core family, and the gap between the two would remain significant and anyone who uses an ultraportable for heavy multi-tasking or content creation will want an ultrathin laptop rather than a netbook.
The real competition here isn’t Atom. Rather it is AMD’s recently-announced ultrathin platform, code-named Nile, which includes lower-priced 45nm Neo dual-core and single-core processors, that is the direct competitor. AMD claims to have 26 designs wins for Nile, including systems from HP and Acer, and it will be interesting to see how the two platforms compare in terms of performance and battery life.

HP's been pushing out laptops like it's going out of style, but for some reason or another, the G42t never seemed to make it into any of the outfit's recent press releases. No matter, as the aforesaid machine has just surfaced on the company's website, and it's not only for sale, it's available for customization. Users can equip the 14-inch laptop with a Core i3 or i5 processor, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, a hard drive ranging from 250GB to 640GB, integrated Intel graphics, a 1,366 x 768 resolution panel and a built-in webcam. New MacBook With 10 Hour Battery Life Now Available

Back when rumors hit the web about an Apple laptop with 10 hours battery life, we were all skeptical. The internet has seen its share of rumors and there is no reason why this too-good-to-be-true MacBook was fiction. I was one of the skeptics. Now I am glad I was wrong.
Yes, the 10-hour battery time MacBook is indeed real. Not only is it real but it is also available for ordering from Apple’s site in Hong Kong, Germany, and Taiwan. Other countries will be able to order the new MacBook soon.
The laptop comes with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor and with NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics. The older version of this new model had a battery life of 7 hours, an already impressive figure. But the new MacBook’s 10 hour battery really goes the extra mile.
A previous MacBook Pro with the same specifications and a 13” screen is currently available for $1199. Priced at only $999, this new MacBook is a winner over the mentioned MacBook Pro.

MacBook Pro i7: worth the wait
I picked up a new “Mid 2010″ MacBook Pro — with Intel i7 processor and the anti-glare, high-res screen — and it’s an amazing notebook that pummels what I previously thought was a very fast notebook.
Benchmarks are outstanding (as previously noted), but adding a Solid State Drive (SSD) makes the new MBP feel ridiculously fast. I moved the Runcore Pro IV SSD from my previous MBP to the new i7 chirpster and it feels even faster.
Migrating from my 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo couldn’t have been easier: I simply moved the SSD into the i7, booted from the included media by holding down the “C” key and installed 10.6.3 over top. It takes about an hour, plus about another half hour (give or take) for all the updates from Software Update.
Word to the wise: don’t forget to deactivate Adobe Creative Suite and to deauthorize iTunes before you pull your HDD/SSD. iTunes purchases can be used on up to five computers, and that can always be reset from the application if you’ve exceeded the cap, but if you forget to deactivate Creative Suite you have to call Adobe tech support to deactivate and activate remotely.
Inertial scrolling is a nice touch that I find myself liking more that I expected. It’s useful for two-finger scrolling on long Web pages and documents and it’s great for scrolling through long drop-down lists of choices. This feature isn’t (currently) available on the Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros, although third-party software allows those user to add similar functionality.
The optional, 1680-by-1050 high-resolution antiglare display (an extra $150) is alone worth the price of admission. Nothing is worse that paying $2,000+ for a notebook computer that you can’t use outdoors during daylight. The antiglare machines sport a cool aluminum bezel (pictured) as opposed to the glareBook’s black glass bezel.
The new MacBook Air-like MagSafe power connector (also pictured) has been changed in the new i5/i7 machines but it blocks the Ethernet and Firewire ports when flipped forward. Hopefully the new barrel-style connector helps cut down on the fraying that I experienced on the last few MagSafe connectors. Apple would have done better by putting little bit of extra space between the USB ports.
Since 4GB of RAM is sufficient for most applications (and because upgrading to 8GB currently costs $400 from Apple, $500 from Crucial) I’ll probably stick with 4GB until prices come down a little. If you’ve found cheaper DDR3 PC3-8500 options, post them in the TalkBack below.
Once my SSD was installed and its software updated, I replace Apple’s weak “SuperDrive” with a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 750GB HDD in an Optibay enclosure cranking the storage in this speed demon up to 1TB. You can go up to 2TB by installing two 1TB mechanisms, or my favorite, 1.5TB via one 1TB HDD and one 512GB SSD. But keep in mind, at higher SSD capacities your cost per MB increases dramatically.
Lastly, if you’ve purchased a new MacBook, don’t forget to calibrate the battery
The battery needs to be recalibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percent display accurate and to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. You should perform this procedure when you first use your computer and then every few months after that.
