China's three mobile network operators have announced their subscriber numbers for last December, which collectively added around 8.9 million new mobile phone users to the market.
China Mobile added just over 4.2 million new subscribers, taking its total base to nearly 522.3 million. The company added that nearly 3.41 million of those were using its TD-SCDMA based 3G network. China Unicom added 640,000 new GSM subscribers, and 920,000 WCDMA 3G subscribers. The operator now has 144.8 million GSM customers and 2.74 million 3G subscribers.. China Telecom added 3.1 million CDMA subscribers, taking its total base to nearly 56.1 million.
China Mobile has for the first time seen its share of new subscribers drop below 50% as increased competition starts to bite. However, it still holds a dominant 72% of the market.
In the landline market, China Telecom lost almost 2.5 million customers, to take its base to 188.6 millon, while China Unicom lost over 2.11 million customers to end the year with 102.8 million landline subscribers.
In related news, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) reported that the telecom industry's operating revenues were RMB 77.8 bln (US$11.4 billion) in December 2009. A total of over 67.35 billion SMS messages were sent during the month, a 10.2 % increase over a year ago.
