Moldova Shuts Down Mobile Network for Two Months

Moldova's telecoms regulator, ANRCETI has suspended Eventis Mobile's mobile operator license for the next two-months pending a spate of customer complaints.

The company has been ordered to fix the problems and notify the regulator of its compliance at least 10-days before the suspension expires. The company was also required to do the utmost to deal with all the complaints from its subscribers concerning interruption of service provision and offer them assistance in their transferal to other GSM mobile service providers.

The request for the suspension however came from the mobile network itself.

Previously, the Agency conducted control actions over the company's activity with regards to compliance with license conditions and end-user protection. As a result of the last control action in December 2009 the findings showed that this company failed to meet its obligation to provide, by the end of 2009, 60% population coverage and operate at least 340 base stations. The company was demanded to remedy the situation by drawing an action plan.

The regulator added that Eventis Mobile ignored its requirements, motivated it is claimed by their action by the lack of financial resources. The company is currently negotiating with national and international investors to obtain additional investments.

The Cypriot-Moldovan company, Eventis Mobile was granted the license for the provision of GSM services on December 26, 2006, with the commercial launch just under a year later. Cyprus-registered Eventis Telecom Holding, which provides mobile services in Kyrgyzstan, is one of the key shareholders in Eventis Mobile. According to the Mobile World analysts, the operator had just 13,000 subscribers at the end of last September - in a market that has just under 4 million mobile phone users.
