Asian Handset Vendor to Be First with Symbian 3 Based Phone

The first mobile phone to be launched running the latest Symbian^3 operating system is expected to be launched by an Asian vendor rather than Nokia, Symbian's chief has told the Reuters news agency. He declined to name the vendor though, although did add that the new Symbian OS is nearly ready for deployment.

The most likely developers of Symbian based handsets are reported to be: Samsung, Fujitsu, Compal, Foxconn, Huawei, Sharp, and ZTE.

Last month Nokia had warned that its first Symbian^3 based smartphone would be delayed by up to three months. Nokia owns the Symbian OS, although it has now released it on an open-source basis.

Lee Williams, executive director of Symbian Foundation told Reuters, "Symbian 3 is almost completely mature. There is a small share of code which is pending checking by its contributors," Looking ahead, he added that the 4th version of Symbian would be announced in the first quarter of next year. "We are heavily dependent on Nokia's development efforts" Williams said.
