Roaming Mobile Data Usage to Soar Due to Social Media Use

Roaming data usage over the summer period is likely to increase due to more and more people using mobile devices to conduct their social networking activity, according to Sony Ericsson.

Social networking has become increasingly integral to people's lives, with most aiming to remain connected and in tune with their sphere of contacts whenever and wherever they are. As such, many consumers have opted for smartphones that offer social networking functionality, so that they can interact with their social networks as and when they feel the need.

With the summer bringing times of good weather and holidays, Sony Ericsson has indicated that the trend in mobile social networking is unlikely to stop as consumers head abroad for their summer breaks. This is likely to result in increased levels of roaming data usage, as tourists continue to update their Facebook and Twitter statuses, and update their contacts on how wonderful their holiday may be.

A representative of Sony Ericsson, said: "The advent of mobile social networking has heralded a revolution in how people consume and use the internet. As such, we would expect that mobile data usage this summer will increase, as more people use smartphones and have access to mobile data whilst abroad, enabling them to engage in online activity just as much as they would normally.

"However, consumers should be wary of the rates of these services, as it is likely that such usage could incur extra charges to their usual tariff. We would advise anyone using their phone abroad to double check exactly which services are included in their deal, and which ones aren't."
