Wistron stands a good chance of receiving orders from Sony for LED-backlit LCD TVs, as the maker's affiliate Global Lighting Technologies (GLT) has obtained certification from the Japan vendor for its LED light guide plate (LGP), according to market sources.
Wistron, which recently took a 18% stake in GLT, may start LED TV shipments to Sony in the second half of 2010, the sources noted.
Wistron and GLT are expected to set up an LED-backlit LCD module (LCM) plant at Wistron's production base in Guangdong, southern China, the sources added.
Digitimes Research's analyst Jessie Lin, who specializes in display products, indicated that GLT's Microlens LGP technology enables to the use of fewer LED chips in edge-type backlighting. GLT's technology can help improve Wistron's competitiveness in the fast growing LED-backlit TV market, Lin noted.
Lin said that with GLT's technology, Wistron may be able to gain OEM orders for mid-range LED-backlit TVs from Sony.
Wistron's LCD TV shipments are expected to reach 5.5-6 million units in 2010, of which 50% will be for Sony, and 15-20% each for Toshiba and Best Buy.
