Brightpoint Wins Indonesian BlackBerry Distribution Deal

Handset distributor, Brightpoint has announced plans to expand the distribution of BlackBerry smartphones in Indonesia. Brightpoint will provide logistics and supply chain expertise, assisting RIM to expand the national distribution of BlackBerry smartphones through Brightpoint's relationships with local distributors.

Last year, the Indonesian government imposed a temporary ban on new BlackBerry model sales until the company increased its local repair and servicing capabilities.

"We are delighted with the positive growth of BlackBerry smartphones in Indonesia," said Gregory Wade, Managing Director, Southeast Asia at Research In Motion. "Together with our strong carrier partnerships and industry leading products, this collaboration with Brightpoint will further strengthen our market position and presence in Indonesia."

"Brightpoint is excited to expand our strategic alliance with RIM by providing logistics and supply chain services for BlackBerry smartphones in Indonesia as part of our global master distributor agreement," said Bruce Thomlinson, Regional President for Brightpoint Asia Pacific. "Working closely with our local distributors, Brightpoint will be able to increase the availability and footprint of BlackBerry smartphones across the country."

Supported models include the BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Bold 9000, BlackBerry Curve 8900 and BlackBerry Curve 8520.

The government has previously estimated that the number of "legal" BlackBerry users may have exceeded one million by the end of last year.
