Thailand Aiming for WiMAX License Auction Next February

Thailand's telecoms regulator expects to grant BWA/WiMAX licenses next February and has set up a committee to study ways of granting the licences, reports The Nation newspaper. The review will run in parallel with the ongoing review of 3G license tender plans.

The regulator is expected to only offer licenses in the 2.3Ghz bands, although this space is currently occupied by state owned operators, TOT and CAT along with the military. A plan will be worked out this year to reclaim the spectrum from the occupants. An option to offer 2.5Ghz spectrum has been ruled out as it is occupied by broadcasters.

The NTC will begin accepting licence applications in late November and will officially award the licences in February next year, a source told the newspaper.
