Twenty-four people, including a famous former footballer, were taken into custody in four Turkish cities on Tuesday on charges of illegal phone tapping, the semi-official Anatolia News Agency has reported.
According to the report, the suspects are accused of illegally tapping phones belonging to top businessmen and other people.
The crackdown was part of an operation targeting a criminal organization that has allegedly engaged in phone tapping in Istanbul and three other cities. The operation was a result of technical and physical proceedings carried out by Istanbul Police Department for Organized Crimes over the past two years.
The report said the former footballer Tanju Colak has also been called in to testify.
Istanbul police chief Huseyin Capkin said that the investigation is still underway and there might be more detainments in the future.
