Mexico's Senate has rejected an amending law from the lower house that would have deferred the deadline for mobile phone users to register their handset ownership details. All phone users are currently required to register their details with the networks by tomorrow (10th April), but it has been estimated that some 30 million handsets are still unregistered.
The lower house bill, supported by the mobile network operators, would have extended the deadline by one year to April 2011.
The telecoms regulator, Cofetel said that the registration service, the National Register of Mobile Phone Users (RENAUT) had 54.7 million registered users out of an estimated tally of 83 million subscribers in the country. In theory at least, any handset not registered by the end of this week faces being disconnected.
The mobile networks are currently understood to be seeking a way of altering the procedure from full disconnection to simply suspending the customer account until they register their handset.
Mobile phone users either send a text message with their personal details, or can visit a retailer to register their details.
