Orange Jordan has launched its HSPA upgrade, preliminarily in select areas in Amman, Irbid and Zarqa. The network upgrade will gradually expand over the next six months to reach most populated areas in the Kingdom.
At the launch of the service, Orange Jordan's CEO Nayla Khawam outlined the various phases in which the company intends to roll out 3G+ services in the Kingdom, indicating that the network will initially cover West Amman, Irbid and Zarqa, and will expand in April to reach the rest of the Capital. During summer of 2010, network coverage will have reached most urban locations in the Kingdom, delivering services to approximately 70% of populated areas, which translates to around 2 million people. She also outlined the basic requirements for accessing Orange's 3G+ services, which include 3G+ capable SIM cards (called USIM cards), 3G+ capable handsets and locating within 3G+ coverage areas.
Commenting on service fees and prices, she reassured subscribers that Orange does not intend to raise tariffs on essential voice calling and SMS services for subscribers migrating to the new 3G+ network.
Khawam also added that the company has signed a strategic partnership agreement with the Arab television network MBC, whereby several of the network's popular programs and series will be streamed exclusively through Orange's 3G+ network directly to subscribers' handsets. The service is the first of kind in the Kingdom.
