Rumoured Samsung Tablet to Be Based on Android OS

A rumoured tablet device due from Samsung later this year may be based on the Google promoted Android operating system, reports the Dutch Tweakers website. The tablet, which had been presumed to be a Windows based device is also reported to operate faster than the upcoming Apple iPad.

Reports that Samsung were working on a tablet device first emerged from Emmanuele Silanesu, National Product and Marketing Manager for Samsung Australia's IT division as reported by APC magazine. Silanesu told APC that Samsung would release its slate "in the second half of the year" and the device would have a clear focus on the consumer market.

A later report by Tweakers, citing several sources within Samsung said that the device would be based not on Windows OS as had been presumed by some reports, but on the Android OS due to the need to meet speed requirements.

"I do feel that that slate-type platform has legs but I think the legs need to be far more powerful, for example an Atom-based product which has far greater flexibility, not to mention inputs and outputs. This has more potential than an iPad." added Silanesu.

Contrasting with Apple's iPad, the Samsung device is expected to support a wider range of 3rd-party peripherals

"The problems I see with the iPad are its processing power and (lack of) connectivity to a certain extent" director of Samsung Australia's IT division, Philip Newton, told APC at the Samsung Forum in Singapore.
