Vodafone Replacing Hacked Smartphone Memory Cards

Vodafone Spain has had to replace some 3,000 memory cards that had been shipped with its smartphones after it was revealed that they contained a virus, or malware application which infected the phones when they were first switched on. The main malware application is reported to be the Mariposa, which tries to extract personal information from smartphones and pass it to criminals.

Initially, Vodafone claimed that the problem was an isolated incident, but after increasing numbers of complaints emerged, the company agreed to carry out a mass recall of the infected memory-cards.

In response to questions about the latest report, the spokesperson provided a statement to CNET that said: "Vodafone Spain has identified customers that could potentially be affected by the incident and Vodafone Spain will be sending these customers a new memory card. Additionally, Vodafone Spain will provide these customers with tools to verify and fix the integrity of their devices."
