Panasonic upgrades Toughbook 19 convertible tablet PC with Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost

Panasonic’s rugged Toughbook 19 is getting a little tougher and a little faster with some snappy upgrades, including some speedy Intel features.

The 5.1-lbs. machine is going from a Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 1.2GHz processor to a Core i5 i5-540UM vProTM 1.2GHz CPU, with Turbo Boost up to 2.0GHz. Not bad indeed. While the option for Windows XP downgrade remains, the operating system standard will jump from Vista to Windows 7 Professional.

Some of the other add-on options include Gobi2000 3G with GPS and integrated WiMAX for the boost to 4G connectivity.

Like most other rugged machines, the Toughbook is spill-resistant and ready for some serious drops (from up to six feet). Developers have tested it and certified it ready for operating in “hazardous and mission-critical environments.” And if you’re afraid of who might be looking over your shoulder, the screen is ready to be put into concealed mode for extra security.

For a closer look at what else is packed in that durable, magnesium alloy exterior, here’s a list:

* 10.4-inch LED backlit, touchscreen display
* 2GB of DDR3 memory (Option to upgrade to 8GB)
* 160GB SATA shock-mounted hard drive with quick-release
* 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi
* Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR
* Backlit keyboard
* Fingerprint reader
* SmartCard reader
* Battery life: Up to nine hours
* Built-in camera
* Connectivity: Two USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, Data/Fax Modem, VGA, Headphones/speaker, Microphone line-in, Firewire, SD/SDHC, PC Card, ExpressCard

The upgraded Panasonic Toughbook 19 is available now for $3,399 with a three-year limited warranty.
